Redefining Balance and How to Prioritize Your Health Through the Holidays and Beyond.

A few years ago, I heard a phrase that completely reshaped how I approached my goals:

"It's not that you don't have time, it's that you don't have your priorities in order."

This revelation struck a chord as I was spending a disproportionate amount of time driving across Chicagoland for client visits, often leaving little time for anything else.

We all feel busy, but those who lead the lives we admire don't use busyness as an excuse. They prioritize their time effectively. Realizing I was inefficient with my time, I made a drastic change in my business model, focusing on achieving both professional success and personal freedom.

It was time I built my business around my life, not my life around my business.

This transformation was daunting but necessary to avoid a future where I'd regret not being present for my family. Here's how you can start doing the same:

Understanding Your Life's Jobs:

  • Make and Manage Money: Your career or business.

  • Build and Sustain Health: Physical and mental well-being.

  • Build and Nurture Relationships: Personal connections.

  • Nurture Spiritual or Religious Ideologies: Your inner peace or faith.

Each of these areas requires your time and attention to thrive. Here's how we typically allocate our time:

  • Work: Time dedicated to your job or business activities.

  • Family: Moments with loved ones, from immediate to extended family.

  • Social: Interaction with friends, nurturing both new and old relationships.

  • Leisure: Personal time for self-care, hobbies, or relaxation.

Action Step: Inventory Your Time:

Reflect on the past month. Use your calendar or digital tools to see how much time you've spent in each category. You might discover surprising imbalances.

Re-prioritizing Your Time:

Balance doesn't mean equal distribution. It's about aligning your time with your life's goals. For instance, if health is your 2024 goal:

  • Leisure: Swap screen time for physical activities like walking or gym sessions.

    1. Family: Set boundaries around food choices during gatherings.

    2. Work: Ensure you're getting enough rest by setting work boundaries.

    3. Social: Choose activities that support your health goals.

Again, balance isn't allocating 25% to each area of your life. It means allocating the right percent to the main things.

Why This Matters:

Your life is a reflection of how you spend your time. If you aim to lose weight, get stronger, or boost your energy, each area of your life should support this goal.

Moving Forward:

  • This isn't about perfection but about making purposeful adjustments. Regularly review and tweak your time allocation to better serve your objectives.
